![]() Homer: Credited with composing The Iliad and The Odyssey, Homer is arguably the greatest poet of the ancient world. Nazim Hikmet : Born in 1902 in what was then the Ottoman Empire, Hikmet went on to write multiple epic works, including Human Landscapes from My Country: An Epic Novel in Verse. The following poets, as well as many others, are known for their work in the epic form.ĭante Alighieri: The author of La Commedia ( The Divine Comedy), Dante Alighieri was born Durante Alighieri in Florence, Italy, in 1265.Īnne Carson: A poet, playwright, and classicist, Carson is the author of numerous genre-defying works that borrow from the epic form, including The Autobiography of Red. Examples such as The Cantos by Ezra Pound, Maximus by Charles Olson, The Anniad by Gwendolyn Brooks, The Battlefield Where the Moon Says I Love You by Frank Stanford, The Iovis Trilogy by Anne Waldman, and Paterson by William Carlos Williams all push and pull at the boundaries of the genre, re-envisioning the epic through the lens of modernism. In the twentieth century and beyond, poets expanded the epic genre further with a renewed interest in the long poem with the canto. The epic has also been used to formalize mythological traditions in many cultures, such as the Norse mythology in Edda and Germanic mythology in Nibelungenlied, and more recently, the Finnish mythology of Elias Lönnrot’s Kalevala. ![]() Some epics of note include Beowulf, Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene, John Milton’s Paradise Lost, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Aurora Leigh. Over time, the epic has evolved to fit changing languages, traditions, and beliefs. Greek and Latin epics frequently open with an invocation to the muse, as is shown in the opening lines of The Odyssey. ![]() Homeric verse is characterized by the use of extended similes and formulaic phrases, such as epithets, to fill out the verse form. Both of Homer’s epics are composed in dactylic hexameter, which became the standard for Greek and Latin oral poetry. Many of the world’s oldest written narratives are in epic form, including the Babylonian Gilgamesh, the Sanskrit Mahâbhârata, Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, and Virgil’s Aeneid. The word "epic" comes from Latin epicus and from Greek epikos, meaning "a word a story poetry in heroic verse." The elements that typically distinguish epics include superhuman deeds, fabulous adventures, highly stylized language, and a blending of lyrical and dramatic traditions, which also extend to defining heroic verse. Epic is a long, often book-length, narrative in verse form that retells the heroic journey of a single person, or group of persons. ![]() We love your pets, which is why they aren’t allowed. Seiko produces a vast assortment of different timepieces but above all else, it is the brand’s dive watches that hold the most cherished place within the hearts of the collecting community. However, while the original 1950s model significantly pre-dated the advent of quartz timekeeping, the new Junghans Max Bill Kitchen Clock benefits from the accuracy and autonomy of a German-made Junghans quartz movement, while the 60-minute timer remains fully mechanical, just like the original model. ![]() Made out of ceramic with a domed mineral crystal over its dial and finished in a stunning pale blue color, the teardrop shape stays true to the design of the original, with a simple 10” two-handed clock occupying the top portion and a kitchen timer placed at the smaller end below it. However, the very first product that Max Bill designed for Junghans was not a wristwatch at all, but rather a kitchen wall clock, and the brand has recently revived this gorgeous design from 1956 and reimagined it for the modern era. Named after the famous Bauhaus designer and architect, the Max Bill line is easily the most famous and iconic collection from Junghans, and its minimalist design has remained largely unchanged since it was first introduced way back in the 1950s. Aesthetically engaging and connected to their individual manufacturer’s unique design language and heritage, these watch dial-inspired clocks are perfect for everyone from loyal brand enthusiasts to watch collectors to students who simply need a clock to remind them when homework time is up! To further increase our wall clock offerings available from the Windup Watch Shop, we’re adding models from Junghans, Seiko, and Citizen that all draw their aesthetic inspiration from iconic wristwatches that define their respective brands’ catalogs. It’s hardly a secret that we love anything with a connection to watchmaking that tells the time, and we have recently been expanding our selection of wall and table clocks to include models from the exact same brands that produce our favorite wristwatches. ![]() ![]() An interest in horology often only gets discussed within the greater context of watches, but long before people were wearing timepieces on their wrists, they were relying on clocks to provide them with the time of day and keep them on schedule for their everyday lives. ![]() Whether or not Garns was familiar with any of the French newspapers listed above is unclear. He died in 1989 before getting a chance to see his creation as a worldwide phenomenon. Garns' name was always present on the list of contributors in issues of Dell Pencil Puzzles and Word Games that included Number Place and was always absent from issues that did not. The modern Sudoku was most likely designed anonymously by Howard Garns, a 74-year-old retired architect and freelance puzzle constructor from Connersville, Indiana, and first published in 1979 by Dell Magazines as Number Place (the earliest known examples of modern Sudoku). These weekly puzzles were a feature of French newspapers such as L'Écho de Paris for about a decade, but disappeared about the time of World War I. Although they were unmarked, each 3×3 subsquare did indeed comprise the numbers 1–9, and the additional constraint on the broken diagonals led to only one solution. It simplified the 9×9 magic square puzzle so that each row, column, and broken diagonals contained only the numbers 1–9, but did not mark the subsquares. On July 6, 1895, Le Siècle 's rival, La France, refined the puzzle so that it was almost a modern Sudoku and named it carré magique diabolique ('diabolical magic square'). It was not a Sudoku because it contained double-digit numbers and required arithmetic rather than logic to solve, but it shared key characteristics: each row, column, and subsquare added up to the same number. Le Siècle, a Paris daily, published a partially completed 9×9 magic square with 3×3 subsquares on November 19, 1892. Number puzzles appeared in newspapers in the late 19th century, when French puzzle setters began experimenting with removing numbers from magic squares. newspaper, and then The Times (London), in 2004, thanks to the efforts of Wayne Gould, who devised a computer program to rapidly produce unique puzzles.įrom La France newspaper, July 6, 1895: The puzzle instructions read, "Use the numbers 1 to 9 nine times each to complete the grid in such a way that the horizontal, vertical, and two main diagonal lines all add up to the same total." Predecessors ![]() However, the modern Sudoku only began to gain widespread popularity in 1986 when it was published by the Japanese puzzle company Nikoli under the name Sudoku, meaning "single number". The puzzle setter provides a partially completed grid, which for a well-posed puzzle has a single solution.įrench newspapers featured variations of the Sudoku puzzles in the 19th century, and the puzzle has appeared since 1979 in puzzle books under the name Number Place. In classic Sudoku, the objective is to fill a 9 × 9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3 × 3 subgrids that compose the grid (also called "boxes", "blocks", or "regions") contain all of the digits from 1 to 9. It wasn’t dissimilar from my day job as a writer - which involves a similar cycle of construction and backpedaling - or the basic adult experience of chipping away at carefully-constructed plans for the week, only to be thrown off course by some detail you failed to foresee. This certainty of a glorious outcome imbued the building process with a sense of excitement, even when I missed certain steps and had to backtrack by disassembling and rebuilding sections of the castle. I knew that I had everything I needed to pull off the project: the materials, the instructions, and the time. The LEGO Lion Knight's castle, complete with all the amenities, including "a toilet with a sprig of herbs on the wall to mask any septic odors." (Courtesy Miles Howard)Įach step of the way, I knew the methodical process of sticking the Lego pieces together would yield something remarkable - tiny wonders of engineering and artistry. I shut the door, wondering if my roommate would recognize the echo of Lego parts being pushed around, and I got to work. The instruction manuals were as thick as an Ann Patchett novel. When I got home, I opened the box and dumped 26 crinkly plastic bags of bricks and castle parts onto my bed. These passing encounters made the castle purchase feel less like an indulgence and more like being inducted into a newly-daylit society that had once thrummed in the shadows. When I plunked the enormous box on the counter at the Northshore Mall Lego Store, the clerk who rang up my purchase assured me, “You’re gonna have fun with this one.” His colleague, I should add, was busy assembling a Lego model of a working roller coaster for a display case. After two decades of longing, I scratched the itch. I know this because the finished castle is currently sitting on my bedroom shelf, and my fingertips are red and sore from the 48 hours that I spent constructing the Lion Knight’s Castle. Once assembled, the unbelievably detailed castle features a working drawbridge and gate, a dungeon with cave networks and secret doors, a water wheel that turns a rotating grist mill, a courtyard farmer’s market, and even a toilet with a sprig of herbs on the wall to mask any septic odors. In a recent podcast interview, David Beckham said he enjoys building sets like castles and cars, sometimes into the wee hours of the night, because it helps him relax. It brought the company back from the precipice of ruination and mainstreamed the notion of Lego building as something that adults can be proud of. After years of resistance, the company decided to embrace its growing legion of adult Lego maniacs. Lego sets are famously expensive, and as a Boston renter, I couldn’t justify spending utility money just to scratch a builder’s itch.īut one factor behind Lego’s rising price tags was tied to a major pivot the company made in the early 2000s, when it was on the edge of bankruptcy. It was always a fleeting reunion - one that never escalated to a purchase. But that yearning to hear the rustle of Lego pieces in a fresh, soon-to-be-opened box lingered, through my 20s and early 30s, like a sleeping dragon.Įvery time I ducked into a Lego aisle for a nostalgic peek, I would appraise the Danish toymaker’s latest offerings with the eye of a historian, nodding with approval as old themes such as the Forestmen were revived, and frowning as franchised sets like Star Wars and Marvel took up more real estate on the Lego shelves. Inevitably, I reached that teenage juncture where the desire for acquiring new Lego sets is supplanted by more athletic and libidinous pursuits. Like many kids of the 1990s, I grew up clicking the iconic bricks together to create castles, spaceships, pirate refuges, and - at the height of my precocious years - a free-build recreation of Princess Diana’s funeral. They maintain that the earth was designed to be a temporary home, a testing ground to see which members of the human family deserve to go to heaven and live eternally with God. Some say, however, that God never meant for humans to live on earth forever. Thus, consider: Would God have given humans such remarkable qualities, along with a seemingly limitless potential to develop and enhance them, if he meant for us to live only a few short years? The truth is that God gave humans these unique qualities and abilities so that we could enjoy life right here on earth forever. Such attributes put an immeasurable gulf between humans and all other living creatures on earth. Above all, mankind has the unique capacity to worship the Creator. That is why we can appreciate the grandeur of the universe and the wonders of nature, as well as art, music, and poetry. ![]() In addition, humans were endowed with thinking and reasoning abilities, coupled with moral and spiritual capacities. How so? The Bible indicates that humans alone were created in God’s “image” and “likeness.” ( Genesis 1:26, 27) What does that mean? It means that humankind was given characteristics and qualities that mirrored God’s own, such as love and a sense of justice. Of all the forms of life that God has created on earth, humans are truly unique. |
